The Health Benefits of Bivalves: Oysters, Clams, Mussels, and Scallops




Bivalves, like oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops, are nutritional powerhouses that can support your health in some surprising ways. These shellfish are not only delicious but also low in fat, high in protein, and often free of environmental contaminants like mercury. Since they live short lives and are lower on the food chain, they don’t accumulate toxins like larger seafood species do, making them a clean and sustainable choice for your plate.


Oysters

Eating raw shellfish, especially oysters, can expose you to harmful bacteria, and rare contamination risks can occur from environmental factors like algal blooms or sewage releases. Fortunately, these are closely monitored in the United States. Cooking your shellfish can reduce risks and make these nutrient-dense foods an even safer choice.
